The Growers

The area in which we have chosen to grow hibiscus for Simply Hibi is so fertile, and the climate so benign, that the average size of a grower’s farm is less than three acres, of which less than one acre is generally required to meet the annual food needs of the farmer and his family. It is also an area where the use of inorganic fertilisers and pesticides is unusual. This has facilitated the training of farmers in organic methods of growing, for the production of hibiscus and of their own food crops.

Despite the fertile land and the benign climate our production area is isolated, and in a relatively under-developed country like Uganda this means it is very difficult for smallholder farmers to find a market for their crops. The ability to grow for Simply Hibi enables the farmers to generate a dependable cash income, which they will generally use to pay for schooling and medicines.
