Simply Hibi is produced using a variety of hibiscus known as Hibiscus Sabdariffa. This is less well known in Europe than the plant most of us would associate with the name ‘hibiscus’ - the attractive flower known as Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis or Chinese Hibiscus. Both plants are widely grown in tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world, but whereas Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis is primarily an ornamental plant, Hibiscus Sabdariffa has traditionally been used in the preparation of foods, drinks and remedies.

Hibiscus Sabdariffa is an annual plant growing to a height of about five feet, with small pale pink flowers dispersed evenly around its’ branches. When the petals fall from the flowers, the remaining calyx engorge forming a deep red “fruit” surrounding the seeds. This calyx is the image depicted on the front of our packs. Once fully ripe the calyx are harvested and dried, and it is from these that the Simply Hibi infusion is produced.
